We get a little more spoilery this time around for future volumes, mostly because Gaiman is dropping so many hints that it's superhard not to talk about it if you already know what happens.
Also, while we mention being uncertain at the time, I'll go ahead and tell you that yes, we are covering the two Death graphic novels in the future.
I've been waiting for this one - the more I read it, the more I like it - actually, to the point that my most recent reading may have actually put it in a tie with Season of Mists as my favorite Sandman story. On the art side, (and admittedly I don't know what the remastered editions of this volume have done for it, mine is from earlier than that) I rather regret that Jill Thompson's art, which I am also a big fan of, was in my humble opinion, a bit hamstrung by Vince Locke's inking. Knowing how good Jill is as a solo artist, it was something that disappointed me.

We get a glimpse of the past, present, and future in the scene with Destiny and his book. There is one particular panel that shows Dream floating through space in his helm, and if memory serves (I unfortunately don't have the book in hand at the moment) he is said to be physically exhausted, and moments away from his capture.
Knowing what we know now, anyone think we'll be seeing this in greater detail in Sandman Overture? The panel in question from Brief Lives could very well serve as a final scene in Overture, by the looks of where the story seems to be going, and what Gaiman has stated it's supposed to be about. And knowing that, is this an indication that Gaiman may have had the events of Overture - or at least a broad explanation of why and how Dream was able to be imprisoned - whether he thought he'd ever actually be able to tell that story or not - planned at least this far back?
I don't think Angie has read any of Overture yet, so I'll try to tread lightly around any spoilers, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're correct. The timeline seems to be about right, but it's possible Neil has changed his mind, or will not show up the events immediately before he was captured. But Overture is still a long ways off from being finished. We'll see.
DeleteLike the two of you, I had very few memories of this volume beyond the general gist of the plot, but I found it an incredible delight, and like Benjamin, it's very much rivaling (and perhaps surpassing) my enjoyment of Season of Mists. I'm also with Benjamin in finding the inking weak and rough, but otherwise this is a marvelous volume, even for me who's been so bleh on the series as a whole so far.
